Cope and Drag

Melbourne trio COPE & DRAG delivers awe-inspiring and slack-jawed lyrical humdrum. Headed by songwriter Nic Dupleix-Pyke (Big Smoke) and comprised of rhythm section Jackie Wilson (The Sugarcanes) & Thomas Van Der Vliet (The Cherry Dolls).

Not addicted to but committed to the antiquity of overdriven guitars and tales of hope; COPE & DRAG’s debut EP, ‘True Gent’ builds on the wordy irreverence of Bob Dylan with the street smart narratives of Lou Reed. The record draws comparisons to seminal pioneers such The Stooges the Velvet Underground and contemporary favourites such as Cass McCombs and Kurt Vile.

Recorded and produced by Chris Wright and mixed and mastered by Mikey Young of (Total Control, Eddie Current Suppression Ring) COPE & DRAG’s True Gent EP is scheduled for release worldwide in April 2016 on First Love.

The Cherry Dolls announce debut EP ‘Pearls’

With a thirst for straight up, no nonsense rock n roll, The Cherry Dolls deliver a new EP of swaggering fire power for their debut EP for First Love.

Big Smoke anounce new single and national tour with Kitty Daisy & Lewis

Melbourne’s Big Smoke create a sound that dances its way through the history of rock ‘n’ roll. With pop, country and soul sensibilities supporting personal, hard-fought-and-won lyrics, the band journeys towards its true north, the classic song.

Performing with great passion and command, the band is fast becoming known as a group of serious players with serious songs, drawing comparisons to The Band and Big Star or the modern class of Alabama Shakes and The War On Drugs.

The past year has seen Big Smoke go from strength to strength. The band has featured as one to watch on The Age Online’s ‘Stage’ series, toured regularly along the East Coast and released the single ‘Try A Little Love’ following a signing to First Love/Shock Records. The single was well received, airing on Triple J, Double J and Rage and was embraced by community radio nationwide, coming in at #7 on the national AMRAP charts. All this culminated in a sold out launch at Melbourne’s iconic Old Bar, and an international support for the Kitty, Daisy & Lewis Australian tour”

‘Lately’ is the second single and title track from Big Smoke’s forthcoming EP. This pulsating rocker sees Slattery‘s vocals croon over ominous percussion, classic reverberating guitars and driving bass — all seamlessly crafted and delivered with the electricity of a live band playing in a room. It’s a rollicking jam, lovelorn yet anthemic, one to be sung along to from festivals to living room kick-ons.

“Totally enchanting” – Dom Alessio (Triple J)

“Pop and folk are often used to convey positive sentiment, but Big Smoke do it with such earnestness that you can’t help but buy into it completely.” – James Frostick (Who The Hell)

‘Lately‘ is out June 28 via First Love/Shock Records.

With 3 albums to his name, one solo and 2 with The Endless Party, it could be argued that Jimmy Hawk is one of Melbourne’s most prolific and well-regarded folk-psych treasures. After spending much of 2012 touring the UK and couch surfing, the talented songsmith is back with a new single, ‘Yana Homme’.

In similar fashion to the songs on his debut album ‘Echo Park’, ‘Yana Homme’ floats on a sea of jangly guitars and laconically delivered lines. The track also sees Hawk return to his humble lo-fi, 4 track beginnings. Like a conceptual love letter to his heroes, The Beach Boys, The Carpenters and Neil Young, Hawk’s new single flirts with a sense of alchemy that is DIY pop music, all the while displaying that rare ability to attack both the listener’s heart with its melodies and textures, and head with its poetry and themes. In the greatest of songwriting traditions, Jimmy Hawk’s new single ‘Yana Homme’ transcends fad and fashion to ensure the art of earnest expression lives on.

Hawk’s musical dreamscapes have endeared him to a steadily growing fan base and has seen him performed along side favourites such as Cold War Kids, The Temper Trap, Them Swoops and The Shins.

Yana Homme will be released on July 5.

“Designed to cast nostalgic shadows over you life, reminding you of all the blissful romances you never really had.” — Beat Magazine

“Ethereal folk-pop that will have you dreaming of kaleidoscopic love affairs” — Rave Magazine

“Filled with a sense of warmth and humbleness, conjuring nostalgia yet combining it with modernity, Hawk’s lyrics are reminiscent of the beauty of the late Elliott Smith fused with the upbeat surf rock of San Diego natives Wavves.” — Portable TV
