JIMMY HAWK

At once familiar and mysterious, Jimmy Hawk is the sound of road trips, sunsets and romance – requited and otherwise. With a penchant for luscious, transcendental melody and expressive lyricism; Hawk’s musical dreamscapes have endeared him to a steadily growing fan base.

Jimmy Hawk is one of Melbourne’s most prolific and well-regarded folk-psych treasures. From humble lo-fi, cassette four track beginnings, the past five years has seen Hawk release three albums, one solo and 2 with The Endless Party. Like a conceptual love letters to his heroes, The Beach Boys, Big Star, Neil Young; Hawk’s music flirts with a sense of alchemy and DIY aesthetic. His records display that rare ability to attack both the listener’s heart with its melodies and textures and head with its poetry and themes. In the greatest of songwriting traditions, Jimmy Hawk’s artistic mission has been to transcend fad and fashion and ensure the art of earnest expression.

As a seasoned performer, Jimmy Hawk has toured the US and UK and has performed alongside favourites such international acts such as Cold War Kids, The Temper Trap and The Shins.

“I keep hitting repeat on this new tune. It’s got something old school about it all – a little ’50s Elvis-like in the guitars; a little ’60s New Orleans in the rhythm. It’s cool stuff that generates a bit of heat each time I hear it.” **** Richard Kingsmill, TRIPLE J.

“Strangely compelling and unique” — 8/10 album review, Jaymz Clements, TRIPLE J MAGAZINE.

” Another great song from one of Melbourne’s best.” — Simone Ubaldi, BEAT MAGAZINE.

“Jimmy Hawk is a good chance to break out ”— Michael Cahill, THE HERALD SUN.

Sounds like: The Beatles, The Bees, The Thrills

What’s so good?

It’s winter over here in Australia, so I’m always looking for my music to add a little warmth (it’s not really that cold, but you get my drift). Melbourne musician Jimmy Hawk has helped considerably over the past couple of days with his latest single, “Yana Homme.” With three albums already out (one solo and two with The Endless Party), this is his comeback after spending most of last year touring the UK.

“Yana Homme” is like the musical equivalent of a bear hug. Varied guitar work (picked, slide, etc.) is the song’s backbone, while there’s also a clarinet sighting that adds so much to this track. Hawk’s refreshingly gentle vocal tones soften things even more, making it difficult not to let your mind drift off to somewhere sunny.

Despite all this niceness, Hawk’s music is not just easy-listening — there’s a richness to it which makes this more than just your regular summery jaunt. Whatever climate you’re currently experiencing, “Yana Homme” is bound to increase its pleasantness.

With 3 albums to his name, one solo and 2 with The Endless Party, it could be argued that Jimmy Hawk is one of Melbourne’s most prolific and well-regarded folk-psych treasures. After spending much of 2012 touring the UK and couch surfing, the talented songsmith is back with a new single, ‘Yana Homme’.

In similar fashion to the songs on his debut album ‘Echo Park’, ‘Yana Homme’ floats on a sea of jangly guitars and laconically delivered lines. The track also sees Hawk return to his humble lo-fi, 4 track beginnings. Like a conceptual love letter to his heroes, The Beach Boys, The Carpenters and Neil Young, Hawk’s new single flirts with a sense of alchemy that is DIY pop music, all the while displaying that rare ability to attack both the listener’s heart with its melodies and textures, and head with its poetry and themes. In the greatest of songwriting traditions, Jimmy Hawk’s new single ‘Yana Homme’ transcends fad and fashion to ensure the art of earnest expression lives on.

Hawk’s musical dreamscapes have endeared him to a steadily growing fan base and has seen him performed along side favourites such as Cold War Kids, The Temper Trap, Them Swoops and The Shins.

Yana Homme will be released on July 5.

“Designed to cast nostalgic shadows over you life, reminding you of all the blissful romances you never really had.” — Beat Magazine

“Ethereal folk-pop that will have you dreaming of kaleidoscopic love affairs” — Rave Magazine

“Filled with a sense of warmth and humbleness, conjuring nostalgia yet combining it with modernity, Hawk’s lyrics are reminiscent of the beauty of the late Elliott Smith fused with the upbeat surf rock of San Diego natives Wavves.” — Portable TV
