William Van Der Vliet

William van der Vliet hails from the border town of Albury, New South Wales where he grew up writing songs from a young age. Now living in Melbourne, Williams’s synth-psych pop delivers is characterised by its spacey melodies through dirty beats seducing the listener into a dream-filled world.

His debut EP “Nostalgia” provides a sublime insight into young lust and love and draws on 60’s inspired psychedelic and soul influences such as Hendrix and the Stones with contemporary favourites such as Beach House and Wild Nothing. ‘Nostalgia’ takes you to that warm and fuzzy place that only sloppiness and imperfection can take you.

‘Nostalgia’ was recorded and mixed in William and Chris’ hometown of Albury and mastered at Capitol Records in Los Angeles. Out April 2016 on First Love.

Cope and Drag

Melbourne trio COPE & DRAG delivers awe-inspiring and slack-jawed lyrical humdrum. Headed by songwriter Nic Dupleix-Pyke (Big Smoke) and comprised of rhythm section Jackie Wilson (The Sugarcanes) & Thomas Van Der Vliet (The Cherry Dolls).

Not addicted to but committed to the antiquity of overdriven guitars and tales of hope; COPE & DRAG’s debut EP, ‘True Gent’ builds on the wordy irreverence of Bob Dylan with the street smart narratives of Lou Reed. The record draws comparisons to seminal pioneers such The Stooges the Velvet Underground and contemporary favourites such as Cass McCombs and Kurt Vile.

Recorded and produced by Chris Wright and mixed and mastered by Mikey Young of (Total Control, Eddie Current Suppression Ring) COPE & DRAG’s True Gent EP is scheduled for release worldwide in April 2016 on First Love.

The anthemic jams of Tears for Fears coupled with the sublime transience
of Eno period Bowie.

With their fleeting sounds, laconic vocals and instantly memorable melodies, YOUNG HYSTERIA conjures a world lost in translation, yet ultimately romantic and blissful. Following on from their debut single, ‘This Is Not A Love Song’, which had the blogging community throwing superla- tives when it was premiered earlier this year, ‘One Young Lover’ continues their soul-sonic journey, an aesthetic that mirrors 80’s inspired contemporaries such as Twin Shadow and Blood Orange. The new single is as much cinematic in scope as their debut, a love letter written from the lineages of indie, electronica and pop.

‘This band blew me away when I saw them in Melbourne!’ — Riki Maymi, The Brian Jonestown Massacre.

First Love Launch Party Poster

First Love Records, is a new artist run label based in Melbourne, Australia and London, UK. Through a DIY ethos, in addition to releasing quality records, the collective has slowly evolved over the past 2 years with a mission to spread love and goodwill through the music of their artists and parties.
Initially set up by singer songwriter Jimmy Hawk, as a vehicle to put out his solo releases, (3 albums and a 7″) a London branch was set up by long time musical collaborator and colleague Geno Carrapetta from UK band Gentlemen as a vehicle to service his own experimental recordings and publicity for his various club nights in London’s trendy Dalston area. But it wasn’t until Jimmy Hawk’s solo tour of the UK late last year that the pair were inspired to expand and release other records by local and international artists.
This year, First Love Records in conjunction with A Northern Soul marketing is set to release a slew of records by ‘Brave Face’, Canada’s ‘Mohawk Lodge’ who have been garnering rave reviews from Mojo and the UK daily Mirror, as well as new singles by ‘The Endless Party’, whilst simultaneously, from across the world, fuelling East London’s party scene with the monthly club nights ‘Timothy Dalston’ and ‘Der Komissar’. Yes, self-expression is still possible in the corporate teens.
To celebrate, the label will be hosting a massive Melbourne launch party at Ding Dong Loundge on Fri July 5th, with live performances from THE ENDLESS PARTY (Feat. Jimmy Hawk), BRAVEFACE, THE MOHAWK LODGE (Canada), YOUNG HYSTERIA and SINGING FOR HUMANS. 8pm / $15

With 3 albums to his name, one solo and 2 with The Endless Party, it could be argued that Jimmy Hawk is one of Melbourne’s most prolific and well-regarded folk-psych treasures. After spending much of 2012 touring the UK and couch surfing, the talented songsmith is back with a new single, ‘Yana Homme’.

In similar fashion to the songs on his debut album ‘Echo Park’, ‘Yana Homme’ floats on a sea of jangly guitars and laconically delivered lines. The track also sees Hawk return to his humble lo-fi, 4 track beginnings. Like a conceptual love letter to his heroes, The Beach Boys, The Carpenters and Neil Young, Hawk’s new single flirts with a sense of alchemy that is DIY pop music, all the while displaying that rare ability to attack both the listener’s heart with its melodies and textures, and head with its poetry and themes. In the greatest of songwriting traditions, Jimmy Hawk’s new single ‘Yana Homme’ transcends fad and fashion to ensure the art of earnest expression lives on.

Hawk’s musical dreamscapes have endeared him to a steadily growing fan base and has seen him performed along side favourites such as Cold War Kids, The Temper Trap, Them Swoops and The Shins.

Yana Homme will be released on July 5.

“Designed to cast nostalgic shadows over you life, reminding you of all the blissful romances you never really had.” — Beat Magazine

“Ethereal folk-pop that will have you dreaming of kaleidoscopic love affairs” — Rave Magazine

“Filled with a sense of warmth and humbleness, conjuring nostalgia yet combining it with modernity, Hawk’s lyrics are reminiscent of the beauty of the late Elliott Smith fused with the upbeat surf rock of San Diego natives Wavves.” — Portable TV

MOHAWK LODGE ‘Damaged Goods’ Album.

Canadian Indie Rock Group Wastes No Time On Poignant New Album

Mohawk Lodge Promo“Mesh the grunge fried sound of Neil Young and Crazy Horse with Nick Cave at his most feral and temestuous, and you have an indication of the sonic territory this Vancouver-based group alights on. Prepare for scorch marks on the soul at every listen of this, their fourth album.” – UK’s Daily Mirror

“Group choruses/hollerbacks to a slow ‘n’ grooved-up swing, set for your local indie blues joint.” – Stereogum

“What Bazan (Pedro The Lion) would sound like if catchiness was a priority.” – The Glorious Hum

The Album:

Today First Love Records releases Damaged Goods, the fourth album from the Canadian indie rock group The Mohawk Lodge, fronted by Ryder Havdale. The album release accompanies an already in-progress tour across the US that includes 30 plus dates, part of over 150 shows the group will play this year. Currently playing shows on the West Coast, the group will embark on an ambitious trek through the southern US before heading to Australia for a nation tour presented by Tone Deaf in July.

At just 30 minutes, every second of the new album Damaged Goods is packed with substance, making it Havdale’s most urgent and powerful work to date. Inspired by the band’s experiences touring through Europe promoting their third record,Crimes (2010), Havdale sought to capture the intensity and chemistry of their live performances on the next project. Recorded live off the floor with minimal equipment in the midst of a Toronto heatwave, the album breezes by, grabbing the listener with catchy melodies, driving instrumentation and Havdale’s deep, affecting and often haunting vocals. Never one to shy away from emotional content, the album explores the joyous, thrilling highs and punishing, sorrowful lows of a life on the road creating art, and takes the listener along for the ride.

A sense of curiosity and wonder shoots through the layers of Brave Face’s new self titled debut album. Like radiant lightning, this record provides a sense of illumination with its jogging synth-laced paisley guitars and dream filled vocals.
